Background:

Situated in a rural area close to the Welsh border, Whixall CofE (Controlled) Primary School was established in 1967, when the village's council school and church school merged with the Church of England primary school in Edstaston. The oldest part of the school was built in 1891, with two demountable classrooms having been added more recently to cope with increasing numbers of pupils. Outdoor facilities include a playground, a playing field, a netball court and a nature area with a large pond, which was a joint project with English Heritage. Music tuition in the flute and clarinet is offered to pupils. Sports include football, netball, swimming, hockey and tennis. The school provides support to selected charities and has strong links with the Parents and Friends of the School Association. There is a recently-built tennis court and multi sports area, which incorporates a five-a-side football pitch, a hockey pitch, and a netball court. A craft room is being built in summer 2004. The school has built an outdoor classroom for use during the warmer weather. It is in the process of building a thatched bird hide/Celtic hut in the nature area. The school has an independent pre-school nursery on site with 24 pupils.
