Background:

The village school is located in an 'enviable rural environment' about two miles from the market town of Ludlow in rural South Shropshire. Built around a 140 year old traditional school hall, the school has extended into two modern demountable classrooms, purpose-built office block and specialist teaching area and also offers a large secure playing field. It enjoys 'close links' with the community and uses the village hall and the parish church. The school places great importance on sport and, despite its size, partipates in fixtures in five-a-side soccer for boys and girls, netball, cricket, athletics, swimming and duathlon and are South Shropshire indoor athletics champions. A specialist music teacher runs recorder clubs and a music ensemble, the school supports the county music service and can provide tuition in guitar, flute, saxophone and clarinet. Children can also enjoy extra-curricular sports and arts clubs. The Friends of Caynham School raises funds and provides social and recreational opportunities. The school has e-mail links with schools in Australia and Dudley, and children raise funds to help support a school in Kenya. Caynham actively promotes high achievement through its 'able and talented' scheme and, in addition to children who excel in academic study, has county standard musicians, athletes, swimmers and dancers and award winning designers. A part-time special needs teacher is employed and additional classroom support staff assist with children with special needs. The school also employs a teacher to lead able and talented children in the area of creative writing. 'Over subscribed and very popular', the school will nevertheless find space for childen whose families lives in the village area.
