Background:

Adams' Grammar School was founded as a free grammar in 1656 by William Adams, a haberdasher. It is one of seven Haberdashers' Company schools, and still occupies the 17th-century site in the centre of Newport, near Telford. There are nearly 100 boarders, with the senior boarding house on the school site and the junior boarding house at Longford Hall, an 18th-century mansion a mile from the main school site. The school takes the top 25 per cent of the ability range. Wide range of extra-curricular activities, including sport, Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, arts and culture. Specialist technology college status in 1996; also specialist language college status. It has fully-networked computing facilities, a technology block, a mathematics and ICT block, a language laboratory, videoconferencing suite, and a music recording studio. A new sports hall opened in 2003, and a new performing arts centre opened in 2004. Eight new science laboratories in 2007; sciences taught separately throughout. After-school care, until 8pm. Over-subscribed, with three applications per place. Investor in Careers; Sporsmark; Sportsmark Gold (2003); Investor in People status; DfES achievement award (2002). Ethos: 'Enlightened traditionalism: proud of our long history, traditions and high standards, but forward-thinking and go-ahead, preparing students to play a full and active role in the 21st century. Marrying the best of the old with the best of the new'.
