Background:

St Mary's Bluecoat CofE (VA) Primary School is an amalgamation of three different schools. Initially St Mary's had separate infant and junior schools and both schools have long and well established links with St Mary's Church. The Bluecoat school was originally a charity school, which, in the Victorian era, gave education and clothing to boys and girls in the town. It closed before the 1920s and its funds were frozen. This allowed St Mary's Bluecoat School to open on a new site in 1963. The present school has a library and a hall. A specialist nursery and playgroup have been developed within their own enclosure. There is a swimming pool on site, which is used by the whole community, and the school has recieved a Football Association Charter. There is a school choir, orchestra and recorder ensemble, with a high proportion of children learning woodwind, percussion and stringed instruments.
