Background:

The Burton Borough School is situated on the southern edge of Newport, in Audley Avenue. The school was opened in 1957 and since then has developed steadily. In September 2004 it was designated a Specialist Arts College. There are excellent resources and facilities. Computers are used extensively throughout the school. There are three state-of-the-art computer suites. The school's newly installed fibre optic network links all classrooms. Major investment has transformed the school library into a multimedia learning resource centre, which supports children's learning inside and outside the classroom. There is a large hall and adjoining dining area with a stage and lighting equipment. There are two gymnasiums and outside there are tennis and netball courts and extensive fields for rugby, football, cricket, athletics and hockey. The art department has three studios and the music department is based in a magnificent purpose-built block. The science faculty has eight laboratories each equipped to a high standard. The school offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities that pupils can be involved in. It also arranges a variety of out-of-school trips including arts visits, skiing trips, science trips and theatre trips. In 2002 the school was presented with three prestigious national awards: Investor in People; Investors in Careers and the Basic Skills Quality Mark. The school aims to promote the right environment, physical, intellectual and spiritual, in which it can most effectively educate young people.
