Background:

Set in 20 acres of grounds among the Shropshire hills, the school opened in modern buildings in 1960 and was extended in 1971, 1995, 1997 and 1998, with a 'full range of purpose-built specialist areas'. Facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, field studies centre, community concert hall, and information technology suites. The school has two fully equipped gymnasiums and a fitness studio. Its outside areas include an all-weather area marked out for seven tennis courts. It has extensive fields including a hockey pitch, two football pitches, a rugby pitch, cricket square and an artificial cricket wicket. Seasonal pitches include rounders and softball. The school is proud of its sporting records. The over-subscribed school puts on a 'significant arts production' involving at least one quarter of pupils every year. Every two years, there is an expedition to the uninhabited island of Mingulay, in addition to trips to France, Russia and Austria. The school has regional and national representatives in sports, offers hockey, netball, golf, athletics, cross-country and basketball, in addition to more than 60 clubs and societies. The school aims at helping all its pupils to develop attitudes, understanding and skills necessary to become a fully participating member of a democratic community, to develop personal values and appreciate the qualities and abilities of other people and their way of life and to develop a positive self image.
