Background:

The school was first established in 1825, the school occupies its original buildings which have since been modernised to cater for the present curriculum and teaching. A new school is now being built but current facilities include a large hall which provides a central resource area and room for drama, physical education and music, a recently-built technology/art room, and a 'well resourced' non-fiction library. Each class also has a 'well-stocked' reading area. Outside there are hard-play and woodland areas and the children's play and curriculum is enhanced through full use of the environment including a large nature garden with shrubs, wild plants and woodland. Each class has three computers, printers, recording cassettes and headphones. A 'large variety' of extra-curricular activities is on offer. These change each term to enable 'even the smallest pupils' to participate in all sporting, arts and language clubs in the range. The school is 'keen to develop music and the arts' and instrumental teaching is available in violin, brass, flute, clarinet, keyboard and recorder. Theatre visits, theatrical groups, musical ensembles and orchestral visits are 'regular features' of school life. As part of the millennium charity appeal the school is raising funds for Farm Africa and, as part of this, the school has had visitors from Ghana and pursued work and dancing based on African culture. Much of the school's resources have been provided by the fund raising activities of parents and by private donations.
