Background:

A village school founded in 1860. Serves the village of Bicton and the surrounding area, with approximately 20% of pupils from outside the catchment area. The original building remains in use, in addition to a demountable building with playground, small gardens and lawned area. Has use of adjacent playing field and village hall. In addition to national curriculum subjects, French is taught in Year 6 by a specialist teacher. Children with special educational needs (SEN) are given in-class support, and teachers guided by a Shropshire learning support advisory teacher. Swimming, cross-country, athletics, football, netball, unihoc and rounders are offered in school and as out of school activities. Successes in area competitions in 2000 included swimming and the Shropshire small schools cross-country, while the school is proud of its 100% pass rate for safe cycling. All Key Stage 2 children play the recorder and the school orchestra features flutes, clarinets and violins and every child in the school was involved in a professionally produced Christmas CD. There are links with the local village, including the playgroup and church, and children are encouraged to raise money for charity. Youth hostel visits are organised for Years 5 and 6 . The school 'aims to provide an attractive and welcoming environment' and a 'high standard of education to all children from the neighbouring communities'.
