Background:
Long Meadow Primary was formed in 1991 as an amalgamation of separate junior and infant schools. It occupies a range of buildings from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Located in the centre of the village, Long Meadow is set in 'extensive' grounds and has eleven classrooms, including two classes for children with learning difficulties, two halls, an athletics track and a wildlife area. The site is shared by the local education authority's (LEA) music and arts service and Long Meadow has been able to develop a 'sound musical tradition'. The nursery attached to the school is an LEA centre for excellence and the school also piloted the authority's 'Gifted and Able Child Policy'. Extra-curricular activities include art club, orchestra, choir, recorder, rounders, football, netball, French and athletics. A residential visit for pupils in Years 5 and 6 and an arts festival alternate each year. Links have been established with residential facilties for the elderly and approximately #1,000 is raised annually for charities. Long Meadow has the broadest provision for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) in Shropshire. The SEN department is staffed by two full-time and one part-time teacher and disability access has also recently been improved.
