Background:

Formed as a result of the amalgamation of two smaller schools in 1988, The Marches stands on a 30-acre site just south of Oswestry and serves the town and surrounding villages. A #3.5m building programme, lasting four years, has enabled the large, fully-subscribed school to be housed on one site in purpose-built accommodation. The building boasts 'outstanding' facilities for mathematics, science and technology. Information technology is 'a major strength' of the curriculum and led to the school receiving Technology College status in April 1996. Music is catered for through a 'wide range' of instrumental tuition, 'flourishing' choirs, bands and orchestras and regular musical productions. Pupils have found county cup successes in soccer, cricket, hockey, netball, swimming and athletics and the school has earned the Sportsmark Award in recognition of its strength in these areas.The school aims to achieve a 'partnership' with parents and the local community. It provides 'a secure and caring environment in which the highest possible attainment is encouraged and expected from every child in all areas of school life. There is an emphasis on positive and shared values'.
