Background:

The County High School was opened on its present site in 1922, with an initial intake of some 60 pupils. The first building was the quadrangle block, which has since been demolished. As the school grew and developed, further building took place. The school's re-organisation as a full 11-18 mixed comprehensive school took place over a number of years. A substantial building project to replace the 'Old School' and the Horsa huts began in October 1985. The two new blocks now provide a library, teaching rooms for English, art, information technology, food and nutrition, a meeting room and a careers/connexions office. A new community building has been added. Other new buildings recently completed include general-purpose classrooms, a science laboratory and further rooms for special educational needs work. The school's sports facilities include a large, fully equipped gymnasium, an indoor heated swimming pool, a squash court and fitness suite, a dual use hall, extensive playing fields on site, a pavilion, three hard tennis courts, a volleyball court, three netball courts and a badminton court. A well-equipped leisure centre is on the college campus. The community college is a caring and challenging educational establishment that provides for continuity of experience and a sense of community. The main emphasis is on recognising each student's capabilities and encouraging everyone to reach their full potential.
