Background:
Originally built in the 1960s as a girls' school, Charlton is situated on the northern edge of Telford and offers 'extensive' playing fields and a 'large, well-equipped' hall. A new technology suite opened in 1996. The school is over-subscribed, with 1.5 applications per place and, although it is an 11-16 school, pupils can take AS-levels in English and computing. 'Particular curricular strengths' include science, English, drama and music. It has a 'very active' physical education department with 'extensive'extra-curricular activities, the main sports being rugby, hockey and netball. There is also a 'large' orchestra and choir and many musical, dramatic and dance evenings. The school has 'strong links' with a school in Magdeburg in Lithuania, and organises school exchanges. It also maintains 'firm links' with local employers and participates in many community events.
